The selection of students including future doctors remains problematic to the point that some propose a draw.
The number of students and the high level of required knowledge have profoundly affected the selection exams, from the essays on a given topic, written or oral, to the multiple choice questions (the famous MCQ!) or binary yes/no questions. Now, computer-based tests (CBT) are even evolving and driven according to the answers given by the student. Hoping of course that the computers will not freeze!
However this mechanical e-learning system must not force us to overlook the humane side, the human factor, empathy and its limits, which can do so much for our career.
This human side is not found in books. We acquire it throughout our medical career alongside the patient and this is what makes the richness of our profession.
Good reading
